Other Swimming Pool Repairs

There are a wide variety of accessories and peripherals on modern pools, such as automatic cleaners, lights, fountains, and controllers.  Most of them, like diving boards, slides, and water features, are relatively simple.  Most of the time, the need for repairs can be prevented by doing simple preventative maintenance.

For example, hand rails and ladders.  Each year, the ladders and hand rails should be removed, and the rails cleaned where they go into the rail receiver.  Treat them with WD40 or a similar product, or even light oil.  A little is all it takes.  Clean the receivers, and spray the interior and bolts wit WD40 or something similar, to keep them from seizing.  Check the condition of ladder treads, and make sure the bolts are tight.  There should be escutcheons, or trim rings, where the rail meets the deck, to keep dirt out of the receivers.

Diverter valves are usually trouble free, but the vanes can get worn and need to be replaced.  It helps if you can identify the valve, in order to purchase the correct parts. The main part that does all the work is called a valve vane.  What it actually does is not so much telling the water where to go, but where not to go.  As you rotate the valve handle, the vane turns and partially or completely blocks one of the ports, forcing the water to go to (or be drawn from) the other port. Usually, the handle grip is opposite the port being blocked.

To replace the valve vane, remove the six or eight screws that hold the top on.  carefully pry the valve cover off, and remove the handle.  The vane should then push out of the lid, and the new one installed.  be careful when putting the valve back together, it is pretty easy to crack it when you tighten the screws.

Safety covers have one main purpose - safety.   Replacing an anchor or spring is one thing, but if the safety cover is old and worn, don't try to fix it. Suck it up and replace it! Again, it's about safety.  Some controllers can be quite complicated, and repairs to controllers and the electrical system are best left to qualified professionals.  While there really is no comprehensive swimming pool owner's manual that covers everything, this site, along with our other sites, is intended to help pool owners get a handle on the basics.  We have links here to our other sites and pages, which are specifically about pool liners, safety covers, chemicals, cleaning and maintenance, spas and hot tubs, and much more.  We are working on these sites to help pool and spa owners get the most from their at-home recreational dollars, because when you do need a professional pool or spa technician, we hope you will choose A-Pro!  A-Pro Services - Your Pool and Spa Service Company.
